FOLIAR FERTILISER Foliar fertilising is when a fertiliser is applied in a liquid (solution) form to plants and is readily available and absorbed by the leaves. Trace elements in the form of chelates are added to the foliar fertiliser to give a balanced fertiliser.

Different NPK formulation combinations are available to meet very specific plant requirements. In contrast a soil applied fertiliser is applied as dry granules to the soil which then has to be dissolved by moisture for the nutrients to be available to the plant via the roots. Certain soil conditions, such as pH , temperature and to much moisture in the soil may render nutrient unavailable to the plant. It has been showed that it is 8 -10 times more effective to foliar feed as far as the amount of nutrients required and the speed with which the nutrients were utilised. The readily available nutrients are more easily utilised as they are directly available to the plant and because and because they do not have to be dissolved by moisture before going into the soil solution and where they may be subject to insolubalisation by incident anions such as carbonate, bicarbonate, hydroxide, known as fixation.

Very important in foliar fertilisers is whether the products being used are chelated. Chelation allows a nutrient to “maintain its own identity” . Chelates are organic molecules that can encapsulate certain highly reactive trace metal cations which prevents them from entering into unwanted chemical reactions and forming insoluble compounds, which are unavailable to plants. HOW DOES FOLIAR FERTILISER WORK ? The beneficial effects of a foliar feeding is due to an increase in cellular based chlorophyll synthesis. This means that chlorophyll production and synthesis is increased in the cells of leaves most exposed to sunlight. This increased cellular activity and respiration, increases uptake of water by the vascular system in response to increased needs of water by the leaves (this automatically brings more fertilising elements into the plant via the vascular system). The need for more water and greater gaseous exchange stimulates additional roots to be formed to provide it. Excess carbohydrate production by the plant, due to greater synthesis of sugars by the increased chlorophyll are excreted by the root hairs which stimulate microbial colonies on the root by providing additional energy sources. The bacterial colonies in turn provide auxins and other root stimulation compounds. More root tissue and root hairs increases the plants ability to uptake water and fertiliser ions. A chain reaction is set up if the right material is applied at the right time to set up this feedback loop.
